Four Years of War. Four Years of Resilience.

February marks four years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine — four years of loss, courage, rebuilding, and unwavering resilience.

This week, Hanna and Eugene Hawryszko (leader of the Association of Ukrainians in Victoria), were invited to appear on ABC News Morning Show to reflect on this anniversary.

In the interview, they spoke about the realities of war, the refugee experience, and the journey of Ukrainians who were forced to leave their homes but not their identity. They shared how Australia has supported displaced families — offering safety, opportunity, and a chance to rebuild.

Rebuilding Life in Australia

Over the past four years, thousands of Ukrainians have adapted to life in Australia. They have entered the workforce, started businesses, enrolled children in schools, strengthened local communities, and continued supporting Ukraine from abroad.

The story of Hanna is one of many — a story of starting over in a new country while carrying the weight of war. But it is also a story of strength, contribution, and hope.

Creating a Place That Feels Like Home

Part of that rebuilding journey was the creation of Otakoï — more than a restaurant. It became a cultural space. A meeting point. A place where Ukrainian food brings comfort to those far from home and introduces Australian guests to our traditions, flavours, and hospitality.

In times of displacement, food becomes memory. Community becomes healing. Creating a place that feels like home is not just business — it is preservation of identity and culture.

Gratitude to Australia and a Call to Action

The Ukrainian community expresses deep gratitude to Australia for opening its doors and providing refuge. This generosity has allowed many to find safety and rebuild their lives. Yet, the fight is far from over. Continued support is essential to ensure Ukraine’s freedom and the well-being of those affected.

Ways to support Ukraine include:

  • Donating to reputable humanitarian organizations

  • Attending cultural and awareness events

  • Supporting Ukrainian-owned businesses like Otakoi

  • Sharing accurate information to combat misinformation

Every action counts in this collective effort to uphold justice and humanity.

Thank you for standing with Ukraine.
